Use the order you want to see on the finished mat. A traditional three-letter monogram often puts the surname initial in the middle, while initials of equal size may read in name order. There is no need to use a convention that does not suit you—enter your preferred sequence and check it in the proof.

For a gift, confirm the recipient’s preferred initials before you design. Pay particular attention to married names, shared surnames, and whether the recipient uses a middle initial.

Look closely at every letter, its order, its shape, and its contrast with the background. Decorative lettering can look different from ordinary typed text. Approve only a proof in which each initial is complete and easy to recognize.
